Situation
The L 264 regional road, utilised by heavy traffic, runs from Euskirchen directly to the junction with the A1 motorway. The surface course was so damaged by transverse, longitudinal and mesh cracks that rehabilitation was necessary. Scheiff GmbH in Euskirchen was commissioned to carry out the construction work. To maintain the newly restored condition of the L 264 in the long term and extend the intervals between refurbishments, the State Road Construction Authority of North Rhine-Westphalia, Euskirchen branch, opted for asphalt reinforcement.
Solution
First, both the surface course and the binder course were milled off. In accordance with established technical guidelines, the resulting surface was treated to ensure the conditions for good bond between the layers were met. Bitumen emulsion U70K was then sprayed onto the prepared substrate. This was followed by the full-surface installation of the asphalt reinforcement. The reinforcement could be covered immediately with the new binder and surface courses. The straightforward installation process, combined with the experience and expertise of the companies involved, contributed to the rapid completion of the project and thus to the swift reopening of the L 264.
Advantages
This reinforcement offers the advantage that it can be laid directly onto milled surfaces. Numerous studies and many years of experience confirm that the use of asphalt reinforcement extends the intervals between refurbishments many times over.
