Renovation of the K 81

Situation

The K 81 leads directly into the industrial estate in the town of Velpe. Due to its proximity to the A 30, various central warehouses and haulage companies have established themselves here alongside several commercial enterprises. The heavy use of the road did not go without consequences: numerous longitudinal and transverse cracks ran across the road surface, and, in some places, spalling was visible at the edges. Road rehabilitation was therefore essential. Steinfurt District Council opted for asphalt reinforcement to maintain the condition of the K 81 in the long term. A HaTelit C brand asphalt reinforcement grid was used. This reinforcement offers the advantage that it can be laid directly onto the milled surfaces.

Solution

First, both the surface course and the base course were milled off. This was followed by surface treatment in accordance with established technical guidelines for the laying and compaction of asphalt. The conditions for good inter-layer bonding were now in place. A U 70k bitumen emulsion was sprayed onto the prepared sub-base. The asphalt reinforcement was then laid over the entire surface. The reinforcement could be covered immediately with the new binder and surface courses. The use of sophisticated equipment and experienced staff from all the companies involved ensured the project was completed quickly and successfully.
