Situation
As part of repair works, the heavily cracked asphalt surface of Techelweg and Penkenstraße in Schiefling am See was to be rehabilitated. The aim was to find a cost-effective rehabilitation system that would also offer a long service life. It was necessary to prevent the existing cracks from penetrating directly through the new surface layer, thereby extending the intervals between rehabilitation works.
Solution
Following a detailed assessment by the Carinthian Provincial Government and the Building Department of the municipality of Schiefling, it was decided to carry out the refurbishment using an asphalt reinforcement mesh. A profiled layer with a thickness of approx. 3–4 cm was applied to the existing, heavily cracked asphalt layer. This was sprayed on with approx. 0.7 kg/m² of bitumen emulsion HB 60K (U 60K). Once the sprayed emulsion had ‘set’, the reinforcement mesh was laid in accordance with the installation instructions. To complete the work, a 5 cm thick layer of asphalt was laid.
Advantages
Practical experience confirms that the use of asphalt reinforcement mesh extends the maintenance intervals many times over.
