Project description and challenge

The delta of the Nemunas river is not only important as well-known tourism destination for Lithuanians and international guests but also as strategic area since the Nemunas delta borders on the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad. Therefore the reconstruction of the Lithuanian State road 206 from Šilutė to Rusnė as the only access road to the delta of the river Nemunas was one of the top priority infrastructure projects in Lithuania for the year 2019. The Nemunas is the biggest Lithuanian river and causes often flooding during spring time. Parts of the State road 206 were regularly flooded and cut the connection to the city of Rusne and other settlements in the Nemunas delta. Due to very soft subsoil which consisted mainly of peat serviceably criteria of the road could not be fulfilled.

Solution

Due to the importance of this road an efficient solution which allowed the reconstruction of the road within a short period of time should be found. The solution was to build a road embankment on piles. Fegda group installed both piles and pilecaps as cast in situ. Directly on top of the pilecapes 2 Products, one was installed in crosswise and one in the longitudinal direction. We designed for this project a composite material, joining a layer of non-woven geotextile with a high strength geogrid, which separated efficiently the weak subsoil from the new embankment and at the same time served as basal reinforcement over piles. Over 140.000 m2 of geosynthetics material were installed.

Benefits

- Shortened installation time

- Easy installation
